Brake vans were an essential feature of unfitted freight trains across Britain's railway network, providing a safe working space for the guard while also supplying additional braking force on long goods trains. Throughout the LNER, LMS and later British Railways eras, these vehicles could be found at the rear of almost every freight service, where guards monitored the train, applied the hand brake when required, and communicated with signalmen along the route. Although brake van working largely disappeared with the introduction of fully fitted freight trains during the late 1960s and 1970s, these iconic vehicles remain a favourite with railway enthusiasts and add an authentic finishing touch to any steam or early diesel-era goods train.
