Historical Background
Introduced in 1928, Sir Nigel Gresley's Class A3 was an improved development of the original LNER A1 Pacific design, created to meet the growing demands of high-speed express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line. The principal improvements included a higher-pressure boiler, increased superheating, and revised cylinder dimensions, resulting in greater power, improved efficiency, and enhanced reliability. Between 1928 and 1949, almost every surviving A1 locomotive was rebuilt to A3 specification, while a further 27 new A3s were constructed, bringing the total class to 78 locomotives. Among the most famous members was No. 4472 Flying Scotsman, whose enduring fame has made the A3 one of Britain's most recognisable and celebrated steam locomotive classes. The A3s remained the backbone of the LNER's premier express services before continuing under British Railways until their gradual withdrawal during the 1960s.

Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood
Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood, Hecht and Colin describe employing a process similar to that a tailor might use to cut a pattern in fabric. This approach resulted in the beautiful structure wherein the moulded back and arms component is supported by a simple A-frame wood dowel construction. One of the benefits of this design is an increase in comfort due to natural movement in the plywood back.
