Full Description
This book looks at most of the various class of Diesel Locomotives that could be found working in Scotland in the years before the introduction and complete re-numbering of the BR Loco fleet in which was largely completed but not entirely during 1974. There are some DMU and shunters in this volume but it is mostly the locomotives that make the majority of the publication. Both freight, parcel and passenger workings are illustrated so that should interest those who also have an interest in rolling stock from these times. This was the time of maroon coaching stock with the introduction of the blue and grey coaches from 1966 onwards.
There has been much variety in the main line locomotive fleet North of the Border and this book illustrates many of the different classes of locomotives that have worked in Scotland. Some were short lived like the Claytons. Others like the Class 47 can still be seen at work in Scotland on Charter trains occasionally now. This is the period of green locomotives and the early blue liveries which started to appear from 1966.
Many photographers in this period disliked the new Diesels so did not record in colour the early years. This all Colour book is based mainly on the Norman Turnbull collection in the Transport Treasury Archive as thankfully Norman did record many scenes from the 1960s and later. Quite a few of the locations depicted have closed and no longer on the Railway Network as the 60s was a time of great change on the railways with many lines seeing their last trains.
If like me you travelled the Railways of Scotland years ago this will bring back nostalgic memories of when the diesel locomotive reigned supreme and there was plenty of variety.
