Historical Background
The TEA bogie tank wagon emerged in the late 1960s as part of British Rail’s expansion of high-capacity freight solutions for transporting hazardous liquids. With a loaded capacity of around 100 tonnes, these wagons were built for long-distance movement of petroleum products between refineries, ports, and storage facilities.
Manufactured by several specialist builders including the Standard Wagon Company, Chas Roberts, Powell-Duffryn, Marcroft Engineering, and later Greenbrier Europe, TEA wagons were produced continuously from the late 1960s through to the mid-2000s. They have operated under a variety of owners including private operators, EWS, and VTG, and many examples remain in service today.
The Esso branding seen on this model traces its heritage back to the early 20th century, originating from the Standard Oil Company of America and now forming part of the global ExxonMobil group. This makes the wagon an excellent representation of both historical and modern fuel transport operations on the British railway network.

Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood
Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood, Hecht and Colin describe employing a process similar to that a tailor might use to cut a pattern in fabric. This approach resulted in the beautiful structure wherein the moulded back and arms component is supported by a simple A-frame wood dowel construction. One of the benefits of this design is an increase in comfort due to natural movement in the plywood back.
