Historical Background

The LMS Fowler 3F, more commonly known as the 'Jinty', was developed from earlier Midland Railway tank locomotive designs by Sir Henry Fowler. Built between 1924 and 1931, a total of 422 examples were produced, becoming one of the most successful and widely used shunting locomotives in Britain.

Designed primarily for freight work, yard duties and short-distance goods services, the class proved remarkably versatile and could achieve speeds of up to 60 mph when required. Their robust construction and reliable performance ensured long service lives across the LMS and later British Railways network.

No. 16440 entered service in July 1926 as part of a batch built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow. Renumbered 7357 by the LMS in 1934 and later becoming British Railways No. 47357, the locomotive continued working until its withdrawal from Liverpool Edge Hill depot in December 1966.

Following withdrawal, the locomotive was sent to the famous Barry Scrapyard in South Wales. Fortunately, it was rescued in 1970 by the Midland Railway Centre, where it underwent restoration at Derby Works and emerged in the attractive LMS crimson lake livery represented by this model. Today, it remains an important survivor of one of Britain's most successful tank locomotive classes.
