Until the opening of the Forth Bridge in 1890, passengers from Edinburgh to Fife had to endure crossing the Forth by ferry to Burntisland. With the bridge came a new line from Inverkeithing to Burntisland to join up with the existing line. The Auchtertool line speeded up the transport of coal from the pits to the docks.
