Details
The British Rail Class D16/1 consisted of two pioneering diesel-electric locomotives, originally built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) at Derby Works in 1947–1948 in partnership with English Electric. Numbered 10000 and 10001, they were among the first main-line diesel locomotives in Great Britain, marking an important step in the transition from steam to diesel traction.
Powered by a 1,600 hp diesel engine and capable of speeds of around 93 mph, the locomotives were designed for express passenger services, though they also worked freight and secondary duties. They operated on major routes including London–Derby, London–Glasgow, and West Coast Main Line services, sometimes running in multiple to haul heavy trains.
In 1953 the pair were transferred to the Southern Region for comparative trials with other early diesel types before returning to London Midland Region duties. Both locomotives were withdrawn in the 1960s and later scrapped, although plans to build a modern replica of No. 10000 have been underway in preservation circles.
