History :
Built at Brush Traction in Loughborough, this locomotive started life in June 1961 as D5800 and went new to March in Cambridgeshire. Initially in BR green with white body stripes, it first received small yellow panels in 1962 and then full yellow ends in June 1969. It was renumbered to 31270 under TOPS in 1974, by which point it was carrying BR corporate blue livery with small double arrows on the bodyside.
Our model depicts 31270 in early 1980s condition, when the loco still had a glazed headcode panel displaying domino markers but with a plated nose door and adorned with 'TI' Tinsley depot stickers, which it had been allocated to since 1975.
By October 1987, it was working in the north-east out of Thornaby depot, where it was withdrawn from by EWS in May 2000. The locomotive was later preserved and is currently based at Didcot Railway Centre, named ‘Athena’.
