The principal improvements included a higher-pressure boiler, increased superheating, and revised cylinder dimensions, resulting in greater power, improved efficiency, and enhanced reliability. Between 1928 and 1949, almost every surviving A1 locomotive was rebuilt to A3 specification, while a further 27 new A3s were constructed, bringing the total class to 78 locomotives. Among the most famous members was No. 4472 Flying Scotsman, whose enduring fame has made the A3 one of Britain's most recognisable and celebrated steam locomotive classes.
