Notably, the Diagram 9A and 9B 6-plank open wagons, designed in 1911, extended the standard 5-plank open wagon to a 6-plank body, maximising load capacity. The original Dia. 9A featured a single-sided brake with a right-hand lever and lifting links, but drawings were revised in 1918 to show independent levers on both sides, and altered again in 1923. With a 10-ton load capacity, over 2,000 Dia. 9A wagons were built, making them one of the GCR’s most numerous designs.

In 1919, the Ministry of Munitions ordered 250 10-ton 6-plank wagons, built closely to Dia. 9A; the first 40 were sent overseas, but the order was cancelled, leaving the remainder for the GCR. The 12-ton variant, Diagram 9B, appeared similar but featured RCH split axle boxes. Both types were general-purpose open wagons, carrying a variety of goods and minerals.

Unlike the Dia. 17B, none were built for the CLC, so all remaining wagons were inherited by the LNER at grouping. LNER production continued, with Dia. 9B numbers rising from 229 in 1922 to 779 by 1928, and over 250 of each type passed to BR in 1948.

https://www.harburnhobbies.co.uk/products/995008-rapido-gcr-dia-9a-9b-6-plank-no-532142-lner-grey-post-36
