To streamline the process and save time in production, we included the research, development, and tooling for all three classes when we began development of the Class 44s. This gave us the freedom to announce the arrival of these locos somewhat sooner than we would have done for other models in our range.

With the success of the first Type 4 diesels, Derby Works began the development of the next generation of even more powerful locomotives, the Class 45 and Class 46. These would go on to form the bulk of the Midland mainline fleet for many years.

Despite the 45s and 46s not being named after mountains as their Class 44 counterparts had been, many were honoured with the names of famed British Army Regiments, however, they still retained the nickname ‘Peaks’.

The Class 45 and 46s were pretty much identical to the 44s, also weighing in at around 135 tonnes and powered by a diesel power unit produced by Swiss engineering company, Sulzer. However, the newer power units produced 2500 horsepower, 200 more than their predecessor.

This led to BR placing a more substantial order of 127 locos for Class 45s, this was so many in fact, that Crewe Works were also drafted in to assist Derby with their construction. The first BR Class 45 entered service in late 1960, with the class soon becoming the main loco to work out of St Pancras on the Midland Line
services, demoting the dwindling number of steam locos to cover local services or freight.

The final variant of the ‘Peak’ began production in 1961, now with Brush Electrical Equipment fitted after re-tendering for the next batch of locomotives. This tweaked peak would be known as the BR Class 46.

Externally it looked almost identical, as it had the same engine and body, however, its electrical equipment had received an upgraded generator and different traction motors. Developed by the Brush Company of Loughborough these upgrades replaced the previously used Crompton-Parkinson electrical equipment of the Class 44 and 45.

The 45s were intended to be allocated to multiple regions during their construction and this was initially the case with locomotives allocated to London Midland and Western Region sheds as well as other regions for short stints of training. They soon settle down to more regular work on Midland Mainline and Western Region services. The 46s were used for more varied work, being seen on NE-SW cross-country services, long distance freights from the West Country and some Trans-Pennine services.

With Class 45s and 46s often being seen working trains to destinations across the Southwest and alongside the iconic trainspotting location of Dawlish it's no wonder the loco has a soft spot in many diesel enthusiasts' hearts.

With the introduction of the HSTs on the Midland Mainline and Cross Country routes, as well as the introduction of Class 56s to Coal traffic, the 45s were moved to the Trans-Pennine route to work passenger services across the north of the country.

The aging fleet of well-travelled ‘Peaks’ started to be withdrawn throughout the 1980s. The last of the 44s were withdrawn in 1980, the 46s in 1984, and the final 2 Class 45s soldiered on until 1989. The last ‘Peak’, No.45106, was painted into an approximation of the original BR Green livery and regularly worked the 17:50 St Pancras – Derby service as well as a number of railtours. It sealed the fate of the class with an onboard fire after it failed at Wellingborough with a fuel leak, the ignition presumed to be from brake sparks while being towed dead, which sadly
resulted in its inevitable retirement.

Prior to retirement, the class did have one final claim to fame. Class 46 No.46009 was acquired by the BR Research department, to be used in an upcoming crash test. This famous and very public experiment would see BR test, under crash conditions, the integrity of its supposedly impenetrable Nuclear Flasks.

On July the 17 th 1984, the loco and its train were allowed to run out of control along the old Derby Test Track. With the train approaching its top speed, it crashed into a waiting nuclear flask wagon that had been positioned across the track. Unsurprisingly, the loco swiftly expired in the name of science, exploding in an impressive ball of flames and debris.

The infamous footage taken on that day would be lapped up by railway enthusiasts across the world for many years to come. Not all of the remaining ‘Peaks’ were used as test subjects, and we can be thankful that a number of these locos would sit waiting to be scrapped until 1994, giving budding enthusiasts the perfect opportunity to preserve them. Incredibly 2 44s, 12 class 45s, and 3 class 46s were saved for preservation.

The Rapido Trains UK N Gauge BR 1Co-Co1 Class 45 and Class 46 models have been designed using a combination of archival materials and drawings.

They will be available in a variety of liveries covering the loco's almost 30-year mainline tenure, and several as preserved examples too. They soon settle down to more regular work on Midland Mainline and Western Region services. This neat little shunter was seen the length and breadth of the GNR network, from North London to the Northeast of England.

These started life on the GNR, where they were classified as J13 and based on the Stirling-designed J14 (which featured a domeless boiler). Of course, you can’t trust domeless engines, so Henry Ivatt refined this design with a more efficient and domed boiler variant. They would be fitted with a boiler the same length as the one on the J14, but had an increased diameter. The first J13s rolled off the factory floor in 1897 to work alongside their domeless counterparts on shunting duties.

Between then and 1909, a total of 85 of the class were produced, some at the GNR’s works at Doncaster, and others at a variety of contractors, such as R. Stephenson & Co. The updated design proved effective and as locos moved into LNER ownership many of the J14s were rebuilt as J13s.

Under the LNER the J13s that were domed from the day they were built were reclassified as the J52/2. The class became a common sight in North London, covering the North London Line, Kings Cross, and numerous marshalling yards up and down the country.

Plans were put into motion to scrap the J52s in the mid-1930s, however, this cull ceased when the war broke out in 1939, as any functional locomotive was pressed into service. With the introduction of numerous diesel shunters under the modernisation plan, the withdrawal of the J52s sadly continued.

In 1959 and only a couple of years before the entire class were scrapped, Captain Bill Smith stepped in and saved loco No. 68846 from its inevitable fate. He became the owner of the World’s very first privately owned BR steam locomotive, and the J52/2 earned itself a permanent place in the annals of railway preservation history. The aptly and affectionately named Old Lady would live on. Once in his possession, she was repainted into her beautiful pre-grouping guise and renumbered to the iconic 1247.

With a gorgeous livery, long service history and historical claim to fame, 1247 will always have a fond place in the hearts of travelling enthusiasts and preservation modellers alike. The Captain's decisive action showed that preservation was possible, and sparked a wave of like-minded enthusiasts to follow suit.

The J52/2 model has been designed using works drawings to ensure its accuracy and features a variety of liveries covering the loco's history, such as the bold pre-grouping colours of the GNR, through to various black liveries it sported in its final years. The particularly petite Port of Par Bagnall’s in OO Gauge.

The Port of Par ‘twins’ Alfred and Judy are possibly some of the most recognisable small industrial steam locomotives to work in the UK. The reason these two locomotives were designed requires a look back in time.

In 1829 Joseph Thomas Treffry started to build Par Harbour. His business interests required coal to be imported and copper, lead and granite to be exported. Other ports were too small or faced logistical obstructions – resulting in the creation of Par Harbour.

Over time the port grew as the china clay industry blossomed, and rail traffic started to become the norm. Eventually, the harbour was served by two mainline connections, one from the ‘Down’ side of the Plymouth – Penzance mainline and one from the St Blazey to Fowey line.
The port's first locomotive arrived in 1913 – a rather odd Welsh-built vertical boiler engine. In 1916 a second engine, a rather elderly Manning Wardle arrived and was named Punch. A further small Sentinel locomotive named Toby joined the fleet in 1926. With the downturn of the clay industry in the interwar years and the need to repair locos, the vertical boiler of the original engine was fitted to Punch creating a Frankenstein-looking machine.

By 1936 Punch required replacement. Tommy Truscott – the Ports Engineer decided a new steam locomotive was required and commissioned W.G. Bagnall of Staffordshire to design and build a new locomotive. This loco had to meet certain unusual requirements. The engine had to pass under an 8ft tall bridge under the Cornish Mainline to reach the china clay works along with operating on curves down to a 70’ radius.

In September 1937 the locomotive was delivered at a cost of £1200 carrying the works number 2572. It had originally been planned to name her Chough after the distinctive species of Cornish bird. The message was received by Bagnall as Cough, which they thought was rather strange and so she was sent to Par without a nameplate. She was finally given nameplates that read Judy after 1955.

By 1952 the low-profile Sentinel Toby required replacement and an upturn in traffic meant an order was placed for another locomotive. In 1954 Alfred was delivered (named after the manager of the harbour Alfred Truscott). Whilst nominally the same, Alfred had some differences to Judy with different bunker style, tank and handrail alterations (such as a tank filler that opened in the opposite direction) and a different purchase price – this time £7500.
The engines had a hard-working life hauling thousands of tons of china clay with both engines in operation each day. However, during the 1960s modernisation of the port started and rail traffic started to diminish. The branch line to the china clay workings was lifted and replaced with a road for lorries. Judy had started to experience boiler troubles so was withdrawn from traffic in 1969 - her driver Del Robins taking her into the shed for one last time for not only Judy’s retirement but his own. Alfred soldiered on until 1977 when, rather unglamorously, shunting was taken over by tractors.

The locomotives gained a celebrity status not least because of their unusual size and stature. They were some of the last working steam engines in Cornwall and the site became a stronghold of visits by railway enthusiasts. The engines became so popular that they also inspired the Rev. W. Awdry to immortalise them in his Railway Series stories as Bill and Ben, carrying a striking yellow livery.

Judy was kept cleaned and oiled in the shed at Par whilst Alfred was in operation. With the cessation of rail traffic, new homes were sought for the engines. Judy first went to the recently established China Clay Museum at Wheal Martyn whilst Alfred, in operating condition, went to the Cornish Steam Locomotive Preservation Society.

Both locomotives can now be found on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Judy was returned to operational condition in 2023 whilst plans for returning Alfred to operational condition are being finalised with the intention that both locomotives will be available to work together once again.
The Port of Par Bagnall models have been designed using works drawings to ensure accuracy and feature a variety of livery options covering their history, including those sported in preservation.

‘As preserved’ lined light green and 1960s dark-lined green livery versions will be available as part of the Port of Par Twin Pack Special Editions. In addition to the two incredible models of Alfred and Judy, these packs will feature an Illustrated booklet describing the history of the locomotives, and a postcard print of an exclusive Jonathan Clay painting. All are beautifully presented in a charming presentation box. What a stylish way to house the King and Queen of Cornish preservation. Two single locomotives will also be available in other liveries carried by the individual locomotives – this time in a standard box.

Modellers can look forward to a smooth-running mechanism with flywheel, plunger pickups, a factory-installed speaker on all models, and a Next18 decoder socket fitted under the tank. There will also be separate tooling to accurately portray the slight differences between Alfred and Judy correctly.

ESU has been working with us since the start of the project, the DCC Sound options will be fitted with an ESU Nano chip. ESU is also working on a bespoke electronic setup with us to help with smooth running on DCC.

Special Presentation Box

Illustrated booklet describing the history of the locomotives

Postcard print of exclusive Jonathan Clay painting

Coreless motor

Flywheel

Plunger pickups

Sprung buffers

Detailed cab interior

Factory-fitted speaker

Poseable rear shutters

Diecast metal running board

Optional scale couplings

Optional bufferbeam inserts

Tooling variations to accurately portray each loco

978005 -
