Originally gravity worked, it soon became apparent that Steam power would be needed to help with the increasing demand from the quarries. It was decided in 1860 by the Board, to approve an order for steam locomotives to be built.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBetween 1863 - 64, four small England Locomotives were built in for the Ffestiniog Railway under the design of locomotive designer and engineer, George England. The first four locomotives named - Princess Prince, Mountaineer and Palmerston. Originally built with Square side tanks and open cabs, they were very distinctive locomotives. By the 1880s, the locomotives were rebuilt into their current condition with Saddle-tanks and enclosed cabs.
