Sharing many aspects of its design and features with the Passenger Luggage Vans (PLV, later designated ‘PMV’ by BR), the CCTs differed by having a pair of full width doors at each end, allowing motor vehicles to be loaded and indeed the SR applied the code ‘Covcar’ to many examples, denoting their use as covered car carriers. In addition to transporting motor vehicles and carriages, the CCTs were used to convey all manner of parcels and general merchandise and being express rated, they could run at speed and were often included as part of passenger trains. Construction continued after Nationalisation, however the final examples built had plywood sides – by this time BR had designated them as Covered Carraige Trucks (CCT). These were large vehicles with a 21ft wheelbase and construction was from a metal frame with even planking on the sides and ends. The vans remained in traffic until the 1980s, with some surviving later still, in departmental use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Graham Farish model is highly detailed and carries all the hallmarks of the prototype, from the distinctive roof profile found on many SR vans to the planked panelling – with ‘2+2’ planks on the sides and even planks on the doors – and angled metal framework. Ventilators were fitted along the lower part of the bodysides whilst two pairs of double doors were provided on each side of the van to aid loading and unloading – all are featured on the model including representations of the door locking mechanisms. Four ventilators were also fitted at each end, integrated into the double doors, and these too are modelled accurately. Below the solebar the underframe is modelled in all its glory including brake apparatus along with the finely detailed axleboxes, into which metal wheelsets are fitted. At each end metal buffers are employed. With the Nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948, construction continued under BR and the final examples were outshopped during the 1950s.\r\rIntended for use on express and secondary passenger services, the coaches featured distinctive domed roof-ends and continued to feature the bow-ended profile introduced by Collett in earlier coach designs. Post-war material shortages meant that Hawksworth’s designs were not as lavishly appointed as earlier GWR types, yet still their appearance was maybe not as sleek and modern as the post-war coach designs of competing companies like the LNER (Thompson) and SR (Bulleid). As the hostilities of World War Two drew to a close, a new design of tank with a central anchor mechanism securing the tank to the chassis was agreed between the private operators, the Petroleum Board and the railway companies. Construction of this new wagon did not pick up pace until the early-1950s, and with the introduction of larger, vacuum braked tank wagons during the late-1950s, the Anchor-Mount design soon became obsolete, and the final wagons of this type were built in 1963.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThese new Graham Farish models cover both the Class A and Class B tanks and can be produced with several variations, including the bottom outlet pipe and associated handwheel mounted on top of the tank, the steam heating inlet valve, and with a straight or cranked air vent. The top catwalks and filler can be depicted in their central position or offset, and where fitted the side ladders are constructed from fine metal etches. As standard, each model features separately fitted brake gear and brake levers, along with the filler cap which includes the distinctive securing clamps. On the prototype the underframe was constructed from metal section, and this is replicated on the model affording an unobstructed view through the frames when observed from above.
