The top speed was in the region of 40mph.\r\rSeventy-three OBs, most of which having the classic Duple ‘Vista’ bodywork, were completed by the time the Second World War broke out in September that year. A wartime version, the OWB, was built during the war years, but the OB returned after the conflict, with construction continuing until 1951. Altogether, some 12,693 (some sources say 12,766) were completed; 5,493 of which were exported.\r\rThankfully, around 180 Bedford OBs are known to survive, many of which are in operable condition, so the distinctive gearbox whine that so characterised the OB, can still be heard on Britain’s roads today.\r\rThe model depicts registration LLW837, a 1950-built example that joined the fleet of B & G Margo of Bexleyheath for a two-year period in 1963. The model is finished in Margo’s two-tone red livery with Bexleyheath Transport Co Ltd branding. They were a direct development of the standard RM, and while visually very similar, they differed in having twin headlamps, electrically operated platform doors, more comfortable seats with increased legroom, and the addition of luggage racks. A higher rear axle ratio, rear air suspension, and increased fuel capacity also set the RMCs apart from the RMs.

A total of 68 were built, seeing service with Green Line and later London Country, before all were bought back by London Transport. Many ended up as driver trainers, but seven were reinstated as passenger carriers in 1989 for the new X15 route; the latter remaining in traffic until the early 1990s, although some continued in use well into the 2000s.

This model depicts RMC1502 (registration 502CLT), which entered Green Line service at Garston Garage in November 1962, working Route 719. Its success led to a number of Routemaster variants being produced for LT including short and long wheelbase coaches (the RMCs and RCLs), short wheelbase airport coaches (the RMAs), and long wheelbase, front entrance buses (the RMFs). However, the most successful of all was arguably the RML – a long wheelbase version of the standard Routemaster. The deregulation of UK bus services in 1986 coincided with large scale withdrawals of the standard Routemasters in London. Many of these saw further service across the UK, with several of the newly formed Scottish bus companies taking advantage of well-maintained, traditional open-platform, crew-operated buses. The RMLs, meanwhile, remained in London, with only one seeing service outside the Capital. This was RML registration WLT900 (fleet number RML900), which had been earmarked for scrap by LT following a heavy collision with an excavator. Deemed beyond economic repair by LT, it was bought by Clydeside Scottish and rebuilt, re-entering service in Glasgow in June 1988. It subsequently became something of a celebrity, not only as the only RML outside London, but also for its striking ‘Oor Wullie’s Special’ livery. This was applied to promote the popular cartoon strip in The Sunday Post newspaper, and as such featured images of the cheeky character all round. This model depicts the vehicle in its post-March 1989 condition following the addition of its Clydeside Scottish fleet number – JC10. Extensive research has gone into ensuring that every feasible aspect of the Oor Wullie livery has been reproduced accurately, including the rarely photographed roof artwork, and even the Clydemaster radiator badge. To complete the artwork, Service 36 blinds are shown together with a Kilbarchan destination. But it doesn’t end there, as the model comes in a bespoke box sleeve which, as a licensed DC Thomson product, features classic Oor Wullie character artwork and the official tartan too. The new model is based on EFE Road’s refined and updated RML tooling, which incorporates full bodyside panel lines for the first time on an EFE RML. Conceived in the late-1930s to take advantage of the Southern’s expansive electrified network, two of these Co-Co locomotives were built, gaining the nickname the ‘Boosters’ due to their motor-generator-flywheel drive arrangement employed to overcome ‘gapping’, when the locomotive could momentarily loose its electrical supply when travelling over gaps in the conductor rail.

Produced especially for the EFE Rail range, this all-new model features a wealth of detail with a varied tooling suite allowing the first two locomotives, CC1 and CC2, to be modelled accurately at various points in their careers. Electric Multiple Units were principally employed on these electric routes, but as the system expanded beyond the suburbs, the Southern’s Chief Mechanical Engineer Oliver Bulleid and Chief Electric Engineer Alfred Raworth recognised the potential of electricity to power locomotives that could haul coaching stock and freight too. And so, the pair designed a Co-Co electric locomotive, the first of which was built in 1941. The design of the two cabs shared many features with EMUs of the time, whilst between them, within the body of the locomotive, could be found the electrical equipment.

With a much shorter distance between their front and rear pickups, when compared to a multiple unit, locomotives could be prone to losing electrical pickup if any gap in the conductor rail was greater than the distance between the pickups – known as ‘gapping’. To overcome this, two motor generator sets and flywheels were included in the design with the power collected from the third rail used to drive the generators, fitted with heavy flywheels, which then powered the motors. Thus, power to the traction motors would be maintained by the motor generator sets being driven by the flywheel when the traction supply was briefly lost in the event of ‘gapping’. These motor-generator-flywheel sets were referred to as ‘Boosters’, giving the type its nickname. Pantographs were also fitted for overhead pickup in sidings and depots where a conductor rail presented danger to staff.

The first locomotive, No. CC1 (renumbered to No. 20001 by BR) was outshopped by Ashford Works in 1941. Carrying Photographic Grey livery, three horizontal stripes were applied to the bodysides, culminating at the cab end in what we would now call speed whiskers. Being wartime, the cab windows had metal plates added to the top and bottom to reduce the aperture. Next, No. CC1 carried Malachite Green livery with ‘Sunshine’ Southern lettering and yellow lines at solebar and cantrail level. The second locomotive, No. CC2 (BR No. 20002) was built in 1945 and emerged in the same livery. Both were used on express passenger and goods trains.

Passing into BR ownership in 1948, the pair continued in use, with various modifications over the years. A third locomotive, No. 20003 was completed by BR in 1948 however its appearance differed somewhat, having a cab design based on that of more contemporary EMUs with a slab front. Whilst successful locomotives, being a class of three non-standard types, the ‘Boosters’ eventually succumbed to withdrawal with No. 20003 the first to go in October 1968. No. 20002 was withdrawn in December 1968 and No. 20001 survived until January 1969, having been decorated earlier in BR Blue livery with full yellow ends. The trio were classified as Class 70 under the Total Operations Processing System (TOPS), however their withdrawal by 1969, and subsequent scrapping, prevented any of the locomotives from carrying TOPS numbers.

We are delighted to present this brand new model of the Southern Railway ‘Booster’ Electric Locomotive No. 20002 in BR Black livery as part of the EFE Rail OO scale range. Driven by a 5 pole, skew wound motor with flywheel, each of the six axles are driven whilst all twelve wheels provide electrical pickup. Directional lighting will operate in the forwards direction (the real locomotives were not fitted with tail lights), whilst cab lighting can be operated using a magnetic wand when used on analogue control, or when a 21 Pin DCC decoder is fitted, via two DCC functions.

Being wartime, the cab windows had metal plates added to the top and bottom to reduce the aperture. Next, No. CC1 carried Malachite Green livery with ‚ÄòSunshine‚Äô Southern lettering and yellow lines at solebar and cantrail level. The second locomotive, No. CC2 (BR No. 20002) was built in 1945 and emerged in the same livery. The original locomotives were used on the electrified lines of the Southern Region and were ordered for mixed traffic and could be found hauling high profile services like the ‘Night Ferry’ and ‘Golden Arrow’. Collecting power from third rail via collector shoes fitted to the bogies, the Class 71s also had roof-mounted pantographs to work in yards where overhead lines had been installed instead of using third rail – removing the danger of the live rail to workers operating nearby.

As more Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) arrived the Class 71s were displaced from their passenger duties and soon, the Class 73 Electro-Diesels – which could work ‘off-grid’ on non-electrified lines or if the electric supply was interrupted, during engineering works for example – took much of their freight work too, and by the mid-1960s, ten of the 24 locomotives had been placed in store.

Inspired by the success of the Class 73s, a plan was devised to rebuild the stored Class 71s and so they were taken to Crewe Works where they would be converted to create the Class 74s. Like the Class 73s, these new locomotives were fitted with a diesel engine allowing them to work away from electrified lines.

They retained their bogie pickups to collect power from third rails, however the pantographs were removed. At each end, buckeye couplings, buffing plates and high-level control and brake pipes were fitted to facilitate working with other stock fitted with electro-pneumatic brakes. Returning to service between November 1967 and May 1968, all ten Class 74s entered traffic in BR Blue livery with full yellow ends and were numbered E6101 – E6110, becoming Nos. 74001 – 74010 when they were renumbered under TOPS.

Being able to work on non-electrified lines, including those around harbours and within goods yards, one of the main duties envisaged for the Class 74s was working the boat trains to Southampton and Weymouth which had previously necessitated locomotive changes at Eastleigh and Bournemouth respectively to work the final part of the journey. In practice however, the reliability of the diesel engines meant that the Class 74s were often swapped for Class 33s at Bournemouth for the final leg to Weymouth, although those working to Southampton generally persevered as this involved running on only a short section on non-electrified line where the diesel engine would be called upon.

In addition to their work on the boat trains, the Class 74s were employed as mixed traffic locomotives and saw regular use on passenger trains until 1973/1974 when more 4-REP EMUs were introduced to work Waterloo to Weymouth services. They also regularly hauled night mail and newspaper trains, and were sometimes called upon for other passenger, parcels and freight workings.

Almost a decade after they entered traffic, the entire fleet of ten locomotives had been withdrawn as the curtain fell on Class 74 workings in December 1977. Ordered for British Railways’ Western Region by the British Transport Commission (BTC), all five of these Type 4 A1A-A1A diesel-hydraulic locomotives were built by North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow. As part of the BTC’s Modernisation Plan, various diesel locomotives were trialled and whilst the majority were diesel-electric, the Western Region (WR) was adamant about its preference for diesel-hydraulics. Whilst the WR was concentrating its efforts on designing a smaller Type 4 machine based on the German V200s – which would become the D800s (Class 42 and 43) – the BTC pressed on with its plans for the D600s with which it sought to provide a comparison with the Type 4 diesel-electric D200s (later Class 40). The D800s – which too were known as ‘Warships’ – would go on to be the more numerous and more successful of the ‘Warship’ types. Employing a B-B wheel formation, the D800s were much lighter than the D600s, whilst offering a comparable or higher power output and tractive effort.

The first two D600s, Nos. D600 & D601, were allocated to Swindon but by June 1958 both had moved to Plymouth Laira where there were joined by the final three locomotives. Named after Royal Navy vessels, the D600s carried nameplates bearing the subtitle ‘Warship Class’, a feature shared with the D800s. On 16th June 1958 No. D601 found fame as the first diesel locomotive to haul the Cornish Riviera Express non-stop from Paddington to Plymouth and the class remained in use on fast Bristol/West of England services until they were displaced to secondary duties following the widespread introduction of the D800s.

As built the locomotives carried disc headcodes but these were later changed to a pair of two-character headcode boxes mounted either side of the nose. As the 1960s progressed and the BTC sought to standardise the locomotive fleet, the D600s were an obvious candidate for early withdrawal, being a class of just five that had been well and truly outshone by their smaller, lighter D800 counterparts. All five were removed from traffic by the end of 1967 and although allocated Class 41 under TOPS, all had been sold for scrap long before the system was implemented.

Since the early-1940s the War Department Austerity Saddle Tank has been a common sight on Britain’s railways – playing a vital role in the Allied victory of World War Two before becoming a mainstay of industrial operations and, more recently, heritage railways. Built to a Hunslet design, the construction was sub-contracted to various builders to expedite delivery of locomotives in order to help the war effort. The design was rugged and simple, ideal for operating in a hostile environment and where routine maintenance tasks would often need to be performed in the field. By 1947, a total of 377 locomotives have been built for the War Department but with the war ending two years previous, the military started to dispose of surplus engines; some were brought by the LNER and classified as J94s, others stayed in Europe where they had been deployed and were subsequently purchased by the Dutch Railways and various private industries. In the UK, the Saddle Tanks were popular with industrial users and along with examples purchased from the government, new locomotives were ordered taking construction right up to 1964. Of these new orders, the National Coal Board placed the majority. In industrial use many Austerity Saddle Tanks continued working long after steam had ended on British Rail and such is the simplicity of the design and the ease of operation, seventy examples have been preserved and can now be found at heritage railways throughout the UK.

Bachmann has partnered with Australian manufacturer Ixion Model Railways to bring their award-winning Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0 Tank Locomotives to the EFE Rail range, becoming the brand’s first O Scale Steam Locomotive.
